An inventory manager is responsible for keeping track of available supplies, materials and products in order to guarantee that the company’s employees and customers can obtain the items that they need when they need it. These professionals are vital to the smooth operation of an organization, regardless of the size of their business. He or she records shipments and invoices on a daily basis to help them keep track of the items that need to be restocked. They perform this task by making lists or with the help of supply chain or inventory management software.
Inventory managers also spend a lot of time meeting with other internal managers and executives as well as with vendors, suppliers, transportation providers and various personnel. Inventory managers can work in grocery stores, checking which shelves need to be restocked or in computer repair shops maintaining various computer parts.
Requirements for this position may vary from one employer to another. Students may choose to enroll in an Associate of Science in Logistics and Supply Chain Management or a four-year Bachelor of Science in Supply Chain Management or Business Administration.
Inventory management training is also offered by various colleges and universities, often as continuing education certificate programs. In addition, there are several institutions that offer review classes for certification exams. APICS, the Association for Operations Management awards the Certified in Production and Inventory Management (CPIM) credential which can help those who are seeking career advancement.
Programs for Inventory Managers
- California State University Dominguez Hills offers the Certificate in Production and Inventory Control. Taught by CPIM professionals currently employed in the field, the program is designed for those already employed in inventory management jobs or related positions, as well as those who are considering a career change. The inventory management training is done online at company-sponsored sites. Courses include: basics of supply chain management; detailed scheduling and planning; operations execution and control; master planning of resources; and, strategic management of resources.
- A program to prepare individuals for the Certification in Production and Inventory Management (CPIM) is offered at the Montgomery County Community College through their Center for Workforce Development (CWD). Students will be able to build their knowledge and skills in operations management with the help of this certificate program. The CWD has partnered with PAN-APICS to offer this review program for the CPIM credential exams.
- The Wichita Area Technical College’s review program for the APICS CPIM exams is highly recommended for anyone considering the CPIM certification. Based on the 2008 Tony Arnold text, it describes the basics of supply chain management, manufacturing, planning and control systems, purchasing, and physical distribution.
