Do you want to work in a retail establishment as a manager? Earning a certificate in retail management can help increase your chances of success in the field.
Retail managers oversee the day-to-day operations of retail establishments. This job encompasses a variety of tasks including hiring, training and managing personnel, ensuring that customers get quality service, monitoring sales performance, and planning budgets, among many others. While not all retail management jobs require post-secondary education, you may benefit from a bachelor’s degree in business or a related field. You can also enter a certificate program in retail management offered through many community colleges, universities and vocational schools. These certificate programs are usually offered as continuing education or additional resource for undergraduate business students.
Your retail management training should include such courses as organizational management, retail management principles, computer applications, business math and financial management, human resources, merchandise planning and control, and marketing, among others.
In addition, while certification is not a requirement to attain retail store manager positions, there are some organizations that offer voluntary certification for retail managers. The National Retail Federation Foundation offers awards Certification in Retail Management which signifies an individual’s competency in sales, customer service, merchandising, human resources, operations and administrative and financial accountability.
Programs for Retail Managers
- The Western Association of Food Chains has opened its WAFC Retail Management Certificate Program, a 10-course college-level program endorsed by the Western Association of Food Chains and its member companies. The certificate’s curriculum encompasses several essential business skills involving management and communication that individuals will need to succeed in the retail food industry.
- Developed by the University of Houston Downtown’s Center for Retail Management, the Retail Management Certificate Program is designed for individuals seeking career advancement in their careers in the field. The program consists of 12 sessions delivered online. Students who complete the program will be given a competency exam.
- The Fashion Institute of Technology offers a certificate program in Retail Management that has been developed in partnership with the National Retail Federation Foundation (NRFF). The program is ideal for professionals currently employed in mid-tier retail management positions or individuals who hold a bachelor’s degree in any unrelated field. Students who complete the program may choose to take the optional MOS Excel Certification Exam or the NRFF certification exam, or both, within the FIT Retail Management certificate program.
- The 10-course online Retail Management Certificate program offered by Cerritos College can be completed within two years while students are working part-time or full-time. Retail management courses include such topics as human resources management, fundamentals of retailing, effective communications for managers, business math, and management accounting, to name a few. The program is designed to prepare students for career opportunities in the retail industry and is endorsed by the Western Association of Food Chains.
Madison College’s School of Business and Applied Arts offers the certificate program in Retail Management for students who are currently working in retail, food service, or other sales industry positions or have other related experiences in one of these fields. With the help of the program, students will develop their skills and confidence in such areas as supervising, hiring, training and providing effective leadership.
